The Gift of a Day...

Karen and I hit the jackpot today. Some people might not think it was much, but Karen and I knew it when we saw it. This day was a gift. We rode out to the pier together, in that old black Volvo that just keeps going, and when we saw the waves, our hearts started beating faster. OMG! Look at that, green, and glassy, not a cloud in the sky, and only two guys out? I shouldn't have been there either, but this was definitely worth skipping a day at work for! We thought about Bob, how we planned on meeting at Matanzas and spending the day surfing together in the sun, and headed there. Once there, it looked smaller, weaker, soft, and slow, unlike the pier, where it had looked more powerful and thick, and less affected by the offshore winds. So, back we went, and it was there that we lived out the day, like we had wished for yesterday when we were at work all day making food for people and looking out the window at the gorgeous spring day we were missing out on. Today we made up for everything. First thing, though, I heard someone say, "Miss Macri ... going surfing, eh?" Eeek, it was Dian's Dad from school. BUSTED. But, I held my finger up to my lips, "Shhhh! Don't you dare tell!" I said. He smiled. He knows he owes me, and would never rat me out. Then it was Tom, out in the water saying, "Oh! Look at Miss Macri! She won't let her students skip school, but she can!" I can't get away with anything in this town. Everyone in the lineup turned to look at me, so I pleaded that I needed a mental health day. Who was I kidding? Everyone out there knew. You had to be there today, or suffer the unrelenting anxiety of missing one of the best days to come along in quite awhile. One wave I had I have to record here, to remember, so sorry. Indulge me, or pass this part. I was way outside with Karen, we were talking about life, when it loomed up out of nowhere. I turned and stroked once or twice, it was THAT easy. Up to my feet and carving, going everywhere, I heard the young guy on the fish say, "YEAH!" as I passed him looking up at me, and I said "Sorry!" as I passed him by, because it felt like it was the wave of the day and the peak had come right to me. I could see it in his eyes, he wanted that wave so bad. But everyone had their share, and Karen caught so many good ones, she was smiling the whole day. We stayed out until about 2 pm when we were so exhausted we could barely catch one more. But, it was STILL OFFSHORE!" We had to go in, the sun was beating down on us. Andy and Tom Coates were out on their lunch break on the south side, and we paddled over there to surf with them. What fun we had! Afterwards, we went to lunch together at Mango-Mango's, scoring the last two seats in the place. The manager was so nice, our waitress was so sweet. Karen and I were in heaven, talking about waves, life, our kids, and eating good food. Then, she remembered she had a massage scheduled for 4pm. What luck, I said, what perfect timing! After all that surfing, what could be better? Jealous, I called the place I go to see if there was a cancelation. WHAT? 4pm was mine! I told Karen, "That's our mom and dad talking to us, telling us good for you for taking this day and living it".
