It's another washed out day, clouds looming, rain coming. Waves are choppy, water is bitter cold, and it's too windy to ride. I am nursing a cold, but good to get any sickness over with before going on a surf trip, right?
I was productive today, at the very least. I got back behind the ol' paintbrush again. It isn't a painting I would choose to do, but a commission right now is exactly what I need. This one came when a captain of military affairs visited the cafe, and saw my paintings of historic houses hanging there. He called me up and told me about his commanding general, who is currently living in this grand Victorian mansion downtown. The men serving under him wanted to get together and give the general a departing gift for his upcoming retirement. The general is retiring in June, and so I have had plenty of time to do this. Like Pee Wee Herman avoiding the snakes, I kept walking past the blank watercolor pad and sighing. Not now, not now.
But, caught up on pretty much everything, and feeling a bit weak and sickly, it seemed the perfect time to get it done. Here it is, not exactly the way I would have liked for it to go, but it had to be exact. The general's dog even had to be in it, so there was some time that had to be taken. It took about all day, due to the detail. I would prefer a watercolor with more spontaneity, but it is what it is.
Hopefully it preserved a wonderful memory. What a thoughtful gift to give.
