Surfing in the morning, Nada Surf in the afternoon...

Rushed to the beach at dawn to find Bob and Andy already there. We were amazed that we were the only ones out, the day was gorgeous. Glassy and clean, we rode the inside, since the tide was still a bit high. Soon enough, the tide dropped so that Andy and I decided to paddle outside and catch the peelers we kept seeing trying to break. Right away Andy caught one and then I did, too, and just as he was paddling back out. My wave was beautiful, walling up so clean. I tried to stall to get inside it as he paddled out, hooting at me. I waved to Bob to join us, and soon we were all outside together, and Bob said it was just the best thing, to be out there, the three of us surfing together. Soon Karen showed up, and Mark, and we were all sharing waves in the sunshine. But, all too soon I had to leave for NYC to see Colby. As much as I wanted to stay, I couldn't. The flight was at 11:30am. By the time I saw him at the airport later in the day, it was better than any wave. Even though I probably missed an epic session at the point this afternoon, seeing my boy rushing to me with that big smile on his face just can't compare. And, bonus... on the shuttle from the airport to the subway, I looked up and there right in front of me was the bass player from Nada Surf! I thought I had to be seeing things, but there he was, picking his girlfriend up from the airport. Colby laughed and laughed at how excited I was at this coincidence. And then we were off, into the gray gloom, onto the greasy subway, riding that smelly, clackety subway car with every face imaginable. I saw every kind of people, vampires, Latinos, Chinese, rich, poor. Then we were off to find the best lemonade in NYC ($6!) an amazing falafel sandwich as big as your head, and frozen yogurt at the infamous Pinkberry! We walked the streets with the dog that adores Colby and won't take his eyes off him, Bronxie, and took him on a long walk into Central Park! Never before has there lived a dog so fixated on a stick and a glow-in-the-dark ball, and one that can soar through the air at sonic speed or jump so high. Then we went back to laugh our heads off at re-runs of Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert. Heather came in smiling from work around 10:30pm, with stories from her catering job tonight for a veteran's dinner. She turned somber, recalling the guy that was burned all over his body and face, and all the young guys who were walking around with canes. Imagine a world without war. She told us about seeing Bill and Hillary Clinton at the first post-election function here in NYC, and her smile returned. The catering staff weren't allowed to speak to them, but they were very nice, she said. And then it was off to bed. Tomorrow, it is the vegetarian dream breakfast buffet at 10am, the Met, and more explorations of NYC...
