First off, the waves. Second, I still feel like my head is a snot factory. Third, I finished the last DIBELS test for the entire school, and got the reports on the Principal and Vice-Principal's desks by 3pm yesterday. Fourth, Happy Valentine's Day to me from me! Is that not enough reasons? And, I still am going to my second job at the bakery at 3pm, so I am not totally slacking, dude. At first look, I almost decided it wasn't worth skipping, that I should save this for another day. But, Andy was there in the pier parking lot, pulling on his wetsuit. Karen even showed up, I had to have a fifth reason to seal it, so yes, the number five reason to skip work: surfing with your surf buds! What fun we had! We had all these glassy walls to ourselves until the end, when everyone figured out why we were on the south side of the pier. I said to Andy near the end, "Is it just me, or are we riding wave after wave while those guys on the north side are just sitting?" He smirked, "They think they have to surf there because they always do!" That was fine by us, as we were hardly sitting at all, it was just wave after fun wave. When I came in about 10am, I looked back to see that everyone was on the south side, the north almost completely empty. By then, the tide had filled in, and it was time to go. Andy was off to the skillet licker Toyota factory to deal with the cave men in the repair bays, Karen was off to the first shift at the bakery, and I was off to finish painting that bust of Nefertiti that has haunted me for a month now. What a way to start the day, surfing with friends, gliding across the ocean. Every worry just falls into the realm of irrelevance, and you go back onshore, sigh, and realize you can handle it. At least, it feels like you can.
