You can see from these comparison photographs, that it is time to add something new. I can't write about surfing when there is no surfing to be had around here. Try to guess which shot is of here and which is Central America. We will do this little game every day, until we learn our lesson.
It has been a pathetic year for surf here in St. Augustine.
And, now for something completely different... I am going to do movie reviews! Okay, sorry, but it's my blog.
FIrst up, "The Seventh Seal," by Ingrid Bergman.
This is a 1957 film by one of the most famous film makers of all time. Filmed in black and white, this is a perfect medium for this compelling film that, at first, made me chuckle. It opens on a rugged windswept coast (the waves suck, all crumbly with no shape like here), with a dude in full Crusader uniform. He is a handsome blonde fellow, deep in thought about the meaning of life. His side kick is sleeping on boulders on the beach. This seemed so amusing to me at first, and epecially when the death dude appears and it is time to die. The crusader challenges death to a game of chess, and asks death if he will spare his life if he wins. Sure! But, quickly, the game is interrupted, and we are in the midst of a plague.
I loved this film. Every shot was gorgeously filmed and rich with emotion. I was so busy studying the scenes and characters that it took until morning to really understand what the movie was telling us. I have my own ideas about what this film's message was. You might find something completely different. The timing was perfect for me at this moment. What it has to say about what life is all about seemed so clear after I had processed it.
I won't spoil it for anyone who reads this. Just trust me on this one, please. Put it in your Netflix line up. You will not regret it. I would love to know what you saw in it.
